Shannon McGee
Shannon McGee is a talented local artist whose work transports the viewer in time and space to medieval Europe. He walked the streets of the medieval French town of Foix, where he was teaching English in the mid-1980s. Though he visited museums, castles, and ancient villages all over Europe, he never really thought of becoming an artist. However, it is evident that his current works and media are inspired by his time walking history’s alleys and cobblestone passages. He developed a process that creates a finish with layers of depth and age, like real stone, using marble plasters that date back to Roman times—a lime putty base to which finely ground limestone and marble dust are added and troweled in thin layers. Natural earth pigments, acid stains, fossils, gemstones, charcoal, and varnishes are used to create unique textures and depth. Shannon's work has been highlighted in multiple hotels and retail spaces in downtown Greenville, including a prominent display in the Art House @ Unity currently.
