Joan Miró
"I try to apply colors like words that shape poems, like notes that shape music." – Joan Miró
Born in 1893, Joan Miró was a renowned Spanish Catalan artist who worked in painting, sculpture, and ceramics. Raised in the seaport city of Barcelona, much of his work was influenced by the scenic coastal landscape and the distinct artistic style of the region. His father was a watchmaker and his mother a goldsmith, which exposed him to craftsmanship and the arts from a young age. Some of his earliest known work dates back to 1901, when he was just eight years old. In the later years of his career, Miró’s focus shifted more toward symbolism and the messages conveyed through his art, rather than detailed representation. He placed less emphasis on the specific subject and more on the emotion and meaning that emerged from the final piece. The eccentric and imaginative style that defined Miró’s work reflects not only his unique artistic vision but also his broader approach to the art world. This untitled lithograph, notable for its striking black background, was created just two years before his death in 1983. His works are considered central to the Surrealist movement, alongside those of Magritte and Dalí.
